By: Robert Hoge
Lexile Level: 890L
Robert Hoge wasn’t born an average kid. He had a huge tumor in the middle of his face and short, twisted legs. Surgery was a success, but at a cost. It left his face permanently disfigured. His life would never be the same. Throughout his life, children and adults would put him down and call him horrible names, especially “ugly.” Despite being bullied and called “ugly” constantly, Robert doesn’t let his face define who he is. He continues to grow up and play like a normal child, and surround himself with the people who love him. Similar to Palacio’s Wonder, the main character overcomes his physical and emotional boundaries and shows the world that he is something much more than just being a face.
