Reading Programs

OLPL has a few different reading programs for patrons to participate in throughout the year. All reading programs are tracked through a website called Beanstack. Check out our programs below or stop by one service desks for more information.

1000 Books Before Kindergarten

Reading to your babies, toddlers and preschoolers is the best way to prepare them to become good readers when they get to school. To help you do that, OLPL has joined the national initiative 1000 Books Before Kindergarten. The program makes reading together easy and fun. All children who are not yet in kindergarten are eligible. Stop by the Youth Services desk to pick up your first reading log and a bookmark with recommendations to get you started. Children love to hear the same stories over and over, and doing so is good for them, so if you read the same book more than once, you count it on the log each time. Books your children hear at story times, Grandma's house or preschool all count towards their total. Your children will earn a special character sticker for every 100 books logged, and when they reach 1000 books, they will pick a free book to take home. 1000 Books Before Kindergarten is an ongoing program, and takes some time to complete. While doing so, you and your child will be establishing the habit of reading, building pre-reading skills, and forming precious memories of time spent together with a book.
