Title: Ms. Bixby's Last Day
Author: John David Anderson
Lexile Level: 800L
Pages: 300
Topher, Brand and Steve have an amazing 6th grade teacher, Ms. Bixby. She is a special teacher, one that really cares about her students and does everything that she can to help each and every student. However, with one month left in the school year, Ms. Bixby announces that she has cancer and will not be able to finish out the school year. Topher, Brand and Steve each share a special relationship with Ms. Bixby, so they make a plan to take a trip up to the hospital, and give her a day that she will never forget.
The book alternates between chapters told from each character's perspective. Therefore readers learn about how each boy is connected to Ms. Bixby, and why each boy is so determined to get downtown to see Ms. Bixby. It is a wonderful book for middle school students to read, because of its positive messages: never give up, it is okay to be different, and never let anyone change you.
