Title: One Day in the Eucalyptus, Eucalyptus Tree
Author: Daniel Bernstrom
Illustrator: Brendan Wenzel
Lexile Level: n/a
On the second page of One Day in the Eucalyptus, Eucalyptus Tree, we meet “a boy with a whirly-twirly toy” who has sought out the tree for its shade. Two pages later, the “scare in the air,” a huge yellow snake hidden in the trees’ branches, has devoured the boy. Never fear, though – subsequent pages show the boy, still awake, eyes shining brightly in the dark of the snake’s stomach, cajoling the greedy creature into eating a variety of other animals as well.
As the snake’s bulging stomach fills up with more and more victims, children will probably figure out the boy’s plan. Being in the know makes the narrative even more engaging, as the reader waits for the plan to pay off, all the while enjoying the variety of goofy animals pursued by the snake, the bright, witty illustrations, and the wordplay and musical cadence of the text. A great book to read aloud, One Day in the Eucalyptus, Eucalyptus Tree demonstrates, with joy and style, the virtues of keeping your head and making a plan.
