Friends of the Library
The Friends of the Oak Lawn Library is a non-profit organization of volunteers who help promote use of the Oak Lawn Public Library, furnish equipment and materials that are beyond the Library's budget and bring opportunities for cultural enrichment to area residents.
Join the Friends
The Friends of the Library Board is looking for new ideas and new members. You're invited to join the Board to make connections; voice your vote about upcoming trips and donations to various Library departments; and hear first-hand about Library events, the Book Sale, membership and the annual dinner meeting. Be part of this special group that meets the first Thursday of the month at 1pm in the Mary Nelson Room.
Membership - Each year, we have around 575 members who live in Oak Lawn and surrounding cities. Membership dues are $5 for an individual or $8 for a family (w/spouse & children under age 18). Membership entitles you to receive news updates from the Friends, an invitation to our Annual Dinner Meeting, a $5 discount on most trip tickets and access to special members-only events. If you live outside Oak Lawn and would like to receive the library's quarterly newsletter, Know Now, add $5 to your membership fee to subscribe.
Our group schedules and implements bus trips to various cultural attractions, such as plays, concerts and museums. Membership entitles you to receive a $5 discount on most trip tickets, with a two ticket limit per person. Unfortunately, trips sponsored by the Friends of the Oak Lawn Library are not wheelchair accessible. For all upcoming trips, check out the online calendar or the Library's newsletter. Ongoing Book Sale - The Friends Bookstore is open for business during all Library hours.
The Friends Bookstore is open for business during all Library hours. Stop by to peruse a vast selection of thousands of items at bargain prices: Hardcover books (50 cents); paperbacks (25 cents). At any given time, there may also be DVDs, CDs, audiobooks, magazines, record albums and other media, price as marked. The Bookstore is located on the first floor of the
Library. Shelves are restocked daily. To sustain this successful endeavor, the Friends need volunteers to sort donations and restock the Bookstore. One four-hour shift per week is required. Volunteer forms are available at the first floor Customer Services Desk. For more information, call Carole Onwiler at 708-422-8646.
The Friends are looking for donations of gently used books, magazines, VHS tapes, DVDs, CDs, audiobooks, puzzles, games and record albums. The drop-off area is near the Cook Ave. entrance, and donors may fill out a form at the first floor Customer Services Desk to receive a tax letter acknowledgement by mail.
Friends Movies, Concerts & Discussion GroupsThe Friends provide the funding for movie screenings each month and Sunday concerts from October through May in the Library Meeting Rooms. You will enjoy our broad selection of popular movies, and concerts featuring entertainers from all over the Chicagoland area. Look for our “Movies & Concerts” brochure located in the slatwall holders in the Library lobby.
The Friends also host a Short Story Discussion Group and a Book Discussion Group that meet each month from September through May in the Mary Nelson Room of the Library. New participants are always welcome.
Everyone is welcome to participate. No fee or registration required. For additional information, call 708-422-4990.
