POSITION: Part-time Library Associate, Grade VI
Youth Services Department


The Youth Services Department has a position opening for a part-time Library Associate, Grade VI. The current wage range is $16.77 to $24.16 per hour, and there are Level 1 employee benefits associated with this position, per the current Personnel Policy.

This is an 8 to 19 hour per week “non-exempt” position with a work schedule that may include daytime, evening, and weekend hours.

The function of this position is to provide basic reference and readers’ advisory and other public services within the Youth Services Department. Regular duties include: providing basic reference services, including answering requests for information, readers’ advisory services, and instruction in the use of library resources and equipment; recommending library materials for purchase; promoting the use of collections through the creation of bibliographies, displays, and lists; maintaining statistics; assisting in the maintenance of electronic equipment; and participating in professional and continuing education activities.

Minimum Qualifications: BA or BS degree is required. A strong, friendly public service attitude is essential. Must have the ability to meet and work with children and with people of diverse backgrounds easily and to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Reading background in a variety of subject areas and genres for children from birth through 8th grade preferred. Strong computer skills a plus.

POSITION:     Part-time Library Associate, Grade VI
Adult & Young Adult Services Department, Fiction


The Adult & Young Adult Services Department is seeking a Part-time Library Associate (20-28 hours/week) with a special area of focus on Fiction materials. This is a “non-exempt” position with a work schedule that includes daytime, evening, and weekend hours. Current wage range begins at $16.77 per hour, and there are Level 2 employee benefits associated with this position (including IMRF pension plan and paid leave), per the current Personnel Policy.

Proposed hours for this position: Monday, 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. Tuesday, 1:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Friday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Every third weekend, from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm on Saturday and 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm on Sunday. Additional hours may be required.

We are seeking an energetic, self-motivated and friendly individual who enjoys working with the public. Duties include: Providing basic reference and readers’ advisory services, recommending fiction materials for purchase, participating in organization of library collections, conducting inventory process and overseeing fiction weeding process, assisting with departmental programming, participating in training of personnel, participating in professional and continuing education activities, writing posts for the library website, and other duties as assigned.

Minimum qualifications: B.A. or B.S. Degree. LTA certificate is desirable. Concentration in readers’ advisory or fiction is desirable. Three years library experience, knowledge of library automation, and familiarity with learning new library technologies is desirable. Arabic, Polish or Spanish language skills a plus. Fundamental knowledge of MS Office is required. A reading background in fiction, including a variety of different genres, is essential. Must have a good concept of customer service. Must have the ability to meet and work with people of diverse backgrounds easily and to communicate effectively both orally, in writing, and online. Must have the ability to manage time effectively.
