Title: Counting Thyme
Author: Melanie Conklin
Lexile Level: 680L
Pages: 330 pages
Thyme's 5 year old brother Val is very sick with a serious form of cancer called Neuroblastoma. Therefore, Thyme and her family move from California to New York, so Val can undergo experimental treatment. Thyme doesn't want to leave her best friend Shani, or leave her middle school, but she knows this is what is best for Val. Thyme holds out hope that they will be able to return home by March, if Val's treatment goes well. She wants to celebrate her March birthday with Shani, and her Grandma Kay. In case Val's treatment doesn't go as planned, Thyme has a back up idea. She saves up "time," and hopes she can cash it in for an early trip home. She gets this time by doing extra chores around the house. Will Val be able to go back home for her birthday, or will she be spending more time in New York?
