Title: Amina’s Voice
Author: Hena Khan
Lexile Level: 800
Pages: 208
Recommendations and Comments: Amina’s Voice is a story about a 12 year-old named Amina and her family. Amina is dealing with new friendships and the angst that comes with 6th grade. Amina is trying to fit in, but her family is different and she struggles to stay true to who she is. Her parents came to the United States from Pakistan and have raised their children with American ideals. This becomes a problem when Amina’s uncle comes to visit. There are a lot of misunderstandings as the family tries to enjoy his stay. I liked the story, but felt like the author did not spend as much time as she could on the incident at Amina’s mosque. Amina learns how to use her talents even though she is scared.
