52 Weeks, 52 Books: Week 37

An Extraordinary Union and A Hope Divided by Alyssa Cole // Civil War love stories!

Historical romances are common and popular, but historical romances set during the Civil War? Not so much. So it was a real treat to find these books, and to know that there will be more in the series, which is called The Loyal League. The League is an abolitionist group dedicating to bringing down the Confederacy (and with it, slavery). Each book features at least one member of The League; the romance in each book happens alongside the League plot.

An Extraordinary Union follows an ex-slave undercover agent behind enemy lines, Elle; A Hope Divided is about a free woman of color living behind enemy lines with her “family”, Marlie. Both women meet fellow abolitionists, and sparks fly immediately for both couples. Each novel has a very different storyline and feel, which is refreshing for a romance series. Elle and Marlie are strong heroines who know what they believe in and what they love; by the end of both books, they also know who they love, and what that means for their lives. (It’s not giving anything away to tell you that these books have “happily-ever-afters”; all romance novels by definition have happy endings!) And the male heroes are scrumptious and fun to read about. I promise you’ll be rooting for these two couples!

If you’re looking for a fun and unique romance read, you can’t do better than these two books. It looks like there’ll be a third book in October 2018 as well, so if you like these, you’ll have something to look forward to. To place An Extraordinary Union on hold, click here .
