Announcing the 2020 ALA Youth Media Awards!

On January 27th, The American Library Association (ALA) announced the top books, audio-books, and videos for children and young adults.  Here are some of the 2020 Award Winning Books:


2020 NEWBERY MEDAL BOOK

Title: New Kid
Author: Jerry Craft
Seventh grader Jordan Banks loves nothing more than drawing cartoons about his life. But instead of sending him to the art school of his dreams, his parents enroll him in a prestigious private school known for its academics, where Jordan is one of the few kids of color in his entire grade. As he makes the daily trip from his Washington Heights apartment to the upscale Riverdale Academy Day School, Jordan soon finds himself torn between two worlds, and not really fitting into either one. Can Jordan learn to navigate his new school culture while keeping his neighborhood friends and staying true to himself?


2020 NEWBERY HONOR BOOKS

Title: The Undefeated
Author: Kwame Alexander
This poem is a love letter to black life in the United States. It highlights the unspeakable trauma of slavery, the faith and fire of the civil rights movement, and the grit, passion, and perseverance of some of the world's greatest heroes.

Title: Scary Stories for Young Foxes
Author: Christian McKay Heidicker
A collection of six connected stories that follows a group of fox kits as they fight to survive in an unforgiving wilderness.


Title: Other Words For Home
Author: Jasmine Warga
Sent with her mother to the safety of a relative's home in Cincinnati when her Syrian hometown is overshadowed by violence, Jude worries for the family members who were left behind as she adjusts to a new life with unexpected surprises.

Title: Genisis Begins Again
Author: Alicia D. Williams
Thirteen-year-old Genesis tries again and again to lighten her black skin, thinking it is the root of her family's troubles, before discovering reasons to love herself as is.




2020 CALDECOTT MEDAL BOOK

Title: The Undefeated

2019 CALDECOTT HONOR BOOKS

Title: Bear Came Along
Author: Richard T. Morris
An assortment of animals living separate lives discover they need each other when they have a chance encounter on a river.

Title: Double Bass Blues
Author: Andrea Loney
After school orchestra practice, young Nic carries his double bass through rough neighborhoods to his grandfather's home, where he and Grandaddy Nic play jazz music with friends, delighting the neighbors.

Title: Going Down Home with Daddy
Author: Kelly Starling Lyons
Alan looks forward to the annual family reunion at the farm where Daddy grew up, but everyone is supposed to share something special and Alan worries about arriving with empty hands.
