Full Cicada Moon

A satisfying piece of historical fiction well worth your time. You get a great main character in Mimi, a half-Black, half-Japanese student moving to a mostly white Vermont town. The NASA moon missions have her interested in becoming an astronaut and, in a roundabout way, woodworking, at a time and place when girls were not encouraged to pursue either. As she gradually breaks down misunderstanding and discrimination, she gains friends and treats the reader to bits of Japanese culture. Recommended for middle-grade fans of Hidden Figures. It's told in verse - short chapters of poetic narrative - making it a quick read as well.
