A Night Divided

By: Jennifer Nielsen

Lexile Level: 810
Pages: 317

Gerta’s family is suddenly divided in as the Berlin Wall goes up overnight. After four years of living in an oppressive police state, she and her brother hatch a plot to reunite their family on the other side of the wall. The author doesn’t hold back describing what it is living in a police state, under surveillance, being watched by friends and neighbors. It also has an interesting look into the mindset of someone who is a refugee and what they may be losing in a flight to freedom. Grown-ups might want to read along to help provide some historical context, or just to enjoy the book.
